Signs of Dehydration and How to Prevent It

Water, the most essential nutrient our body requires, is fundamental to all metabolic activities inside our body. All our cells need the right amount of water to function correctly.   1. Feeling Thirsty:  Thirst is the quickest sign we have when the body needs water. So when you feel thirsty, ensure to drink sufficient water.
  2. Dry Mouth:  When our mouth feels dry, and we struggle to produce saliva, it could be a sign of dehydration.
  3. Constipation:  The colon or large intestine is responsible for collecting the water we extract from our food. If the colon absorbs too much water because the body needs it, there won't be enough water to pass the stool, leading to constipation.
  4. Elasticity of the Skin:  Conduct a simple test - pinch the skin on your finger. If the skin returns to its original state quickly, it suggests you are well hydrated. But if the skin maintains the shape of the pinch, your skin lacks the normal elasticity, indicating dehydration. 
  5. Headaches:  This sign is trickier to analyze because headaches could indicate several different problems, such as high blood pressure, eye strain, excessive sugar in the blood, and many more.
  6. Feeling Lethargic or Tired:  : A lack of energy could signify dehydration as the metabolism may slow down due to reduced water levels in the body. Water is the solvent of life, and all chemical reactions occur within a water environment.


 

To avoid dehydration, ensure your diet comprises mainly a whole-food plant-based diet, as most plants we consume are composed primarily of water. Never ignore the signs of thirst or any of the other signs. Your body communicates with you continually, and if you listen, you can avoid illness.

Understanding and recognizing the signs of dehydration can mean the difference between optimal health and preventable ailments. By staying aware of these signs, and responding quickly and appropriately, you can maintain your body's water balance and ensure its smooth functioning.
